Flagship store for Hill Street Market

INNOVATIVE: An artist’s concept plan for the proposed new Hill Street Market and bottle shop in Devonport.TASMANIAN independent food retailer Hill Street, which has seven stores in the state, plans to open its largest store in Devonport.
Nanjing Night Net

The Hill Street Market will employ 50 full-time staff when it opens in the second half of 2016 on a former hardware site in Oldaker Street.

“Hill Street Market will be a new concept for the family-run business and will introduce a new level of retailing in the state,” Hill Street co-owner Nick Nikitaris said.

“We believe Devonport has a very bright future and will continue to develop into a serious commercial hub for tourism, aquaculture and agriculture for the state.”

Mr Nikitaris said it was going to provide Devonport with a “Melbourne and Sydney-style market” with additional shops.

“It will be our flagship store in the North,” Mr Nikitaris said.

Hill Street also just finalised the purchase of the Strahan IGA, which has been on the market for some time. and will take ownership this month.

“An opportunity has come up to buy a very well-run business in a very close-knit community and we are keen to maintain all the staff there,” Mr Nikitaris said.

The Devonport development follows Hill Street’s restoration of the Wells Centre at Latrobe, including a three-month conversion of the SUPA IGA store to a Hill Street, due for completion in January.

“Sales at Latrobe have been beyond our expectations and our customers have liked the changes we have already introduced,” Mr Nikitaris said.

“We love the Latrobe community and we are very conscious of ensuring we become a proper member of the community.”

Devonport site bigger

Mr Nikitaris said it was the size of the site in Devonport which provided the opportunity and enabled Hill Street to do something different to its other stores.

“Hill Street Market will feel like a market in Melbourne or Sydney … because it’s a very large site we can take a different approach and be a bit more innovative and do something out of the box.”

Mr Nikitaris said Hill Street Market can be complimentary to the Devonport City Council’s Living City plans for a food pavilion and market. The council was advertising for investors and lessees at the weekend.

Mr Nikitaris said there is an opportunity for the two markets to create a sense of activity in Devonport and establish a food hub.

“I think at the moment Devonport is generally under-serviced,” he said.

Confident about Coast

“There’s a glass half-empty kind of mindset and we think there is a lot to be confident about in the North-West and in particular in Devonport.”

Mr Nikitaris said there’s potential at Strahan to become part of a strong community “also with a very bright future ahead of it”.

Mr Nikitaris says the nature of Strahan is changing as it undergoes an enormous amount of investment in aquaculture. He said it was important the investment in the local community grew.

He confirmed Hill Street had been talking about opening a store at Sheffield but the talks did not proceed.

“We’re very excited about the North-West and the North of the state and will look at opportunities when they come up,” Mr Nikitaris said.

“But at this stage, we’ve got a lot of work to do and we’re conscious to keep up the quality and standards.”

Family business takes on major chains

Mr Niktaris says Hill Street is, at its heart, a family business.

Brothers Marco, Nick and Nektarios Nikitaris have grown their business from one small corner store into one of the state’s leading premium grocers.

This year Hill Street expanded from three stores at West Hobart, New Town and Lauderdale, adding shops at South Hobart, Blackmans Bay and the Wells store at Latrobe.

Hill Street also moved its original West Hobart shop to a larger purpose-designed grocery and homewares store.

Hill Street focuses on sourcing Tasmanian produce where possible.

Mr Nikitaris says price is absolutely critical but people want to understand where things come from and to have the ability to buy locally and to support the local community as long as the price is right.

Pool repairs – Swim season delayedfor some

BACKWASH BLUES: Three of the six council pools will open for the season tomorrow but for Kootingal pool supervisor Jill Fenn there’s been a dash to her splash with a delay until the end of the month. Photo: Barry Smith 230915BSB12While the main Tamworth pools will open their gates to the new season tomorrow, swimmers at Kootingal, Nundle and Manilla will have to wait a little longer to get into the swim in their centres.
Nanjing Night Net

The major council pools, City and Scully Park, will open from 5.30am, with Barraba opening later for the first time this season, but the Manilla opening has been delayed until Friday because major repair works to contain some pool leaks is still under way.

And problems with how backwash water was being discharged out of the Nundle and Kootingal pools has delayed their opening as well, with an expected start now of October 31.

Tamworth Regional Council on Friday described the delays for Nundle and Kootingal as unfortunate.

TRC operations manager Mike Rowland has apologised to pool users of both communities for the “unfortunate delay” to the start of the 2015/16 season but said it was unavoidable.

He said traditional methods of disposing of the backwash at the two sites have now been found to be out- dated and no longer accepted practice .

Staff had been working to put a new process in place which meets current Environment Protection Authority and NSW Healthguidelines.

Mr Rowland said the proposed solution was to install settling tanks on site at each pool and it would be treated and dispersed via the existing on-site septic system at Nundle, while at Kootingal the water from the tank will go to the council wastewater treatment plant.

“Council is mindful of getting both pools open as quickly as we can by providing a cost effective solution which meets all environmental needs,” he said.

The dates of the new swimming season follows the usual practice of aligning with the start to Term 4 of NSW schools and end of their first term.

Among changes this year is the addition of up to 3.5 hours to the operating hours at Tamworth Olympic swimming pool for the shoulder season October and November.

And City will open for longer over the peak season too.

And council pools this year will also include an expanded Learn to Swim program.

Ciraldo’s Panthers keep their cool to win under-20s trophy

Panthers captain Brent Naden celebrates.
Nanjing Night Net

PENRITH won their second under-20s trophy in three years after outgunning Manly 34-18 in the first curtain-raiser on NRL grand final day.

In his first season as a head coach, former Newcastle forward Cameron Ciraldo guided the Panthers to 23 wins from 27 games, including a grand final performance they controlled from start to finish.

On a scorching spring day that almost hit 35 degrees, the Panthers applied the heat, jumping out to a 12-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes and then holding the Sea Eagles at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Twice the pre-match favourites were forced to defend Manly raids.

First, a try to Manly second-rower Luke Garner in the shadows of halftime cut the deficit to four points, but the Panthers regained the ascendency by crossing for the first two tries in the second half.

Sea Eagles prop Liam Knight gave his team some hope with a line break in the 72nd minute, but Penrith held firm again to deliver Ciraldo his maiden title in his debut year. Coaching had never looked so easy.

“Seven minutes left there, it wasn’t easy,” Ciraldo said after the match. “It’s been a long journey. There’s been a lot of hard work go in throughout that time.”

At the start of 2014, Trent Barrett held the clipboard for Penrith’s junior side before being officially appointed two months ago as Manly head coach.

Ciraldo said after going through Sunday’s match, he was unsure if he had the same aspirations.

“When Ivan gave me this job, I said I just want to have a crack and see if I’d enjoy it,” he said. “I am really enjoying it but, after going through the stress this week, I don’t know if I could go to that level.

“I just got really proud to be involved with this group of kids.”

Penrith led 16-12 at the main break but should have been in front by more after controlling most of the first half.

Direct running from Soni Luke and Tyrone May gave the Panthers a two-try advantage inside the opening quarter, before Manly star Tom Trbojevic hit back with his 29th try in a combined 22 NRL and under-20s games.

Penrith’s own NRL graduate, Robert Jennings, restored the double-digit margin, only for Garner to pull it back again in the 37th.

Panthers centre Maliko Filino took the lead out to 22-12, before halfback Jarome Luai came up with the try of the match with a Shaun Johnson-like individual effort in the 60th minute.

With regular halves partner Nathan Cleary away on Australian Schoolboys duty, Luai also saved a certain try nine minutes later.

Penrith winger Fuimanu Enese sealed the win in the 77th minute. Luke was handed the Jack Gibson medal as man of the match.

“It means a lot, especially with Jack Gibson’s name attached to it,” Luke said.

“I see it as a sign of respect to win the award.”

Ciraldo predicted a big future for his successful side.

“I have a friend who does it and he said it’s a fun and energetic thing to do, so I decided to give it a go,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to the run at the end.”

Mr Cameron-Kirk said he was keen to test himself in the Tri Series event.

“Doing a triathlon is like Christmas to me,” he said.

“It’s tough at times, but it’s just like Christmas.”

Mr Cameron-Kirk said he hoped his participation in the sport would encourage other older people to exercise more.

“No matter how old you are, you can always develop,” he said.

Knights lose to Ipswich Jets in NRLStateChampionship

Cowboys’ first premiership rivals Knights’ 1997 fairytale

THE greatest game of all has a new greatest grand final.

Rugby league genius Johnathan Thurston kicked an 83rd minute field goal to deliver the Cowboys their maiden premiership with a 17-16 victory over Brisbane at ANZ Stadium on Sunday night in the first NRL grand final to be decided in golden-point extra time.

The four-time Dally M Medallist etched his name even deeper into the game’s annals by hitting the match-winner from in front of the posts, then disappeared under a huddle of his delirious teammates.

The Cowboys had trailed 16-12 for most of the second half, and that was still the deficit when the siren sounded and five-eighth Michael Morgan surged towards the Broncos’ line.

Morgan delivered a one-armed flick pass to winger Kyle Feldt, who touched down in the corner to tie the scores, pushing the first all-Queensland grand final past Newcastle’s triumph over Manly in 1997 and Canberra’s extra-time thriller against Balmain in 1989.

Feldt had stripped Broncos halfback Ben Hunt of the ball just 60 seconds earlier to give his side one last possession after they looked done and dusted.

Thurston had the chance to win the game in regulation time but, agonisingly, his sideline conversion attempt of Feldt’s try hit the post.

The crowd of 82,758 held its collective breath as Thurston lined up the kick but it thumped into the post, sending the game into extra time.

Hunt spilled the kick-off, giving the Cowboys prime position to set up for the winning field goal.

Thurston and fullback Lachlan Coote lined up for the kick on successive plays but could not get a shot away.

But when the ball came to Thurston at the end of the set, the Clive Churchill Medallist made no mistake.

Having won a premiership as a bench player with the Bulldogs in 2004, Thurston was desperate to help North Queensland win their first.

‘‘I can’t believe it. I can’t believe what we just done,’’ Thurston told Channel Nine moments after his heroics.

Brisbane, who were a perfect six from six in grand finals before Sunday night, were poised to secure a seventh premiership but could not close the game out.

It was also Wayne Bennett’s first grand final loss as a head coach after winning six titles with Brisbane and another with the Dragons in 2010.

Brisbane led 14-12 at the break after a frenetic first half, in which play pulsed from end to end and the teams traded tries in the opening 10 minutes.

Corey Parker’s 40-metre penalty goal opened the scoring in the sixth minute, then the Broncos went 90 metres a minute later to stretch their lead to 8-0.

Adam Blair popped a miracle pass as he was being tackled on his 10-metre line, then Anthony Milford and Jack Reed combined to send Corey Oates away on a 65-metre gallop to score the first try of the grand final.

The Cowboys responded just three minutes later when hooker Jake Granville collected the ball from the scrum-base close to Brisbane’s line and passed inside for centre Justin O’Neill to score.

Thurston’s conversion trimmed the deficit to 8-6 and the Cowboys were back in business.

Oates tackled opposite number Kyle Feldt into touch in the 13th minute to save a try, then the Cowboys had to scramble in defence three minutes later when Milford burst into the clear down Brisbane’s left edge.

The Cowboys hit the front for the first time when prop James Tamou steamed on to a Glanville short pass to score in the 25th minute.

Thurston converted for a 12-8 lead but the champion halfback’s handling error nine minutes later led to Brisbane’s second try.

Broncos back-rower Matt Gillett scooped up the ball after Thurston lost the handle in a tackle by Gillett and hooker Andrew McCullough.

Gillett broke through several attemped tackles before off-loading to Reed, who touched down to the left of the posts.

After video referees Bernard Sutton and Luke Patten were convinced Thurston was not stripped of possession, they confirmed referee Gerard Sutton’s decision of a try.

Thurston did not protest.

In the absence of Parker, who had been replaced a few minutes earlier, winger Jordan Kahu converted Reed’s try to give the Broncos back the lead at 14-12.

That was how it remained until half-time, though Milford was called on to force Thurston’s speculative chip kick dead in-goal in the final seconds of the half.

Kahu extended Brisbane’s lead to 16-12 in the 43rd minute after the Broncos received back-to-back penalties.

That appeared certain to be the only points of the second half after the Broncos grimly defended their line for long periods, but Morgan and Feldt provided a twist in the tale after the siren then Thurston – who else – determined the outcome in extra time.
